WINE REGION
Island of Hvar
Country Croatia

The island of Hvar is an ancient wine region in the Adriatic Sea situated around 30 km from the Dalmatian coastline famous for its complex and powerful red wines from Plavac Mali, which has probably the best expression from the whole country. The white grape that is becoming increasingly popular is the Pošip Bijeli grape variety producing quite interesting fruity, slightly aromatic and spicy wines. The ancient Greeks sailed into today's Stari Grad on Hvar island around 2400 years ago and hey brought with them olive trees and grapevines from their native island of Paros. Here is found also, the world’s oldest continuously cultivated vineyard at Stari Grad Plain, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage Site.
